How do we know if we are agitated when we are living in a persistently agitated state????
Sometimes in this ‘head down, bum up’ and ‘go go go’ world, it can be incredibly difficult to recognise when we are becoming agitated, annoyed or prickly – this ‘way of being’ can become our ‘normal’. Especially when keeping on going feels like our best and/or only option.
I’ve been pondering on this and thought to share a few ways of exploring:
1. Try a new and different routine – to shake things up a little – even for 1 day. Notice how you feel about changing your routine – be aware of how you are feeling physically, mentally, emotionally and journal as a reflection about your experience.
2. Try giving something up! It might be a habit you’ve developed – try for just a little while to abstain just to see how your whole being responds. As my Mum suggests treat it like a fun game of ‘watch and see’.
3. Try doing nothing for a day! See what urges you have, unconscious patterns you’ve been acting on – being busy can keep us is a perpetual state of doing shit we don’t want to do!
4. Create space – reduce your amount of ‘doing’ just for the sake of doing.
As you incorporate some or all of these explorations into your day or your life, remain open to the experience. This is real life meditation and mindfulness. To ‘watch’ the vrittis – the vacillations of the mind. To ‘feel’ the body – sensing, being embodied. To ‘know’ the hearts true calling. It all takes a little watching. In the process of watching we may also learn to be kind to ourselves, recognising that some things need a little changing from time to time, giving ourselves the gift of space, accepting what is and then learning to steer our ship in the direction of our deepest and most desired aspirations.
How do you navigate agitation? Love to hear your thoughts on this.
